Capability Development

SNS have assisted a number of organizations in quantifying, what capabilities are required (both hard and soft skills) to support particular business functions.

The model we use cuts across all areas of domain expertise from Information Technology professionals through to Finance, Marketing and Sales teams.  The model we use is not unique, however we believe our execution process is.

Capability Maturity Model (CMM) broadly refers to a process improvement approach that is based on a process model.

The Capability Maturity Model can be used to assess an organization against a scale of five process maturity levels. Each level ranks the organization according to its standardization of processes in the subject area being assessed. The subject areas can be as diverse as software engineering, systems engineering, project management, risk management, system acquisition, information technology (IT) services and personnel management.

SNSMC have used this assessment model effectively to identify areas of attention or improvement in a number or organizations.

The model is based broadly on 5 levels:

 

Optimizing level: Continuse process improvment is enabled by quantitative feedback from the process and from piloting innovative ides and techniques.

 

Managed level: Detailed measurements of the service delivery process and service quality are collected.  Both the service processes and the delivered services are quantitatively understood and controlled

Defined level: The service processes are documented, standardized, and integrated into standard service processes.  All services are delivered using approved, tailored versions of the organizations standard service processes

Repeatable level: Basic service management processes are established.  The necessary discipline is in place to repeat earlier successes on similar services with similar service levels

 

Initial level: The delivery process is characterized as ad hoc, and occasionally even chaotic.  Few processes are defined, and success depends on individual effort and heroics

Underpinning the CMM is a detailed skills assessment where individual domain disciplines or specific skills can be reviewed.  Individuals are asked to rate themselves and then management review and confirm these assessments.

Organizations need to make a conscious decision based on risk for return and whats right for their business on where they would like to be a "Optimized environment" and where it might be appropriate for them to be at a "Defined" level of efficiency.

The output of these workshops becomes a key input component to the creation of individual, team and organizational development plans.
