Wounded Iraqi boy undergoes first surgery in Pittsburgh 2009-10-31 15:36:34 | Source An Iraqi boy wounded in an explosion near his home in Fallujah was doing well Tuesday after surgery to reconstruct his injured face, his doctor said. Abdul Hakim Ismael - whose left eye was blinded and who also has a damaged eyelid, socket, jaw and cheek - was in surgery for four hours at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. "Right now, the main goal is functional, which is getting his mouth to work properly," said Dr. Fred Deleyiannis, a plastic surgeon. "Cosmetically, it's very hard to replace an entire cheek or an entire lip." Abdul was injured in a U.S. mortar attack that destroyed his house in April 2004. Abdul's eight brothers were not injured, but his mother, who was eight months pregnant, lost her child. No More Victims, a Los Angeles-based group, sponsored the boy. The boy and his father arrived in the U.S. in February and were staying with a host family. Abdul is expected to be in Pittsburgh for several months. The hospital will absorb half the cost of his stay, and three surgeons - Drs. Tonya Stefko, William Chung and Fred Deleyiannis - and Walter Tillman, who makes prosthetic eyes, have agreed to treat him for free. Massachusetts resident Ray Tye also gave $50,000 toward the boy's care.
