Scott Vogel: No time to quit
2009-11-04 12:09:29 | Source

The baseball, a wicked line drive, hit Scott Vogel under his left eye next to his nose, shattering his cheekbone like egg shells. He wasn't even looking. He had no time or way to protect himself.
The impact left Vogel black and blue for weeks and, worse, bruised forever.

With one freak accident during a routine infield practice five years ago, Vogel's future was severely affected twofold. The injury - which required three surgeries to repair - ruined the vision and momentum he had hoped would lead to a career in professional baseball, but a subsequent injury decree by a judge offered optimism that he might kick off another career as a successful businessman. Then the $340,000 judgment was overturned in an appeals court. Ultimately, the California Supreme Court tagged him out. Vogel got nothing for trying.

It was the most devastating double play Vogel had ever hit into and he didn't even use a bat. Someone else's batted ball smashed and haunted him, inevitably dashing two of his dreams.

"The sad part is that every step of the way I could do nothing. Nothing was in my power," said Vogel, a former league MVP for San Marin High now living in Oregon. "I had no control over it."

Vogel's voice trembled as he recalled the ordeal, yet there was no trace of regret or bitterness in his words. He lives privately with the frustration but forges on, hopeful that destiny will be on his side this time.

"Every time he gets a plan, it gets shot down," said his father, Michael. "He wanted something that he worked for."

At 17, Vogel, a slender yet determined 5-foot-10, 135-pound shortstop/pitcher, was the best player in the MCAL.

"He is very competitive. He was a true gamer," said San Marin coach Mark Whitburn.

The coach first saw Vogel participating in a Little League clinic in Novato. He immediately recognized Vogel's abilities.

"He was heads and tails above the other kids," Whitburn said.

That wasn't the case when Vogel decided to go to college at Chico State, but he made the best of his situation as a second baseman. He was a rare walk-on player for the nationally-acclaimed NCAA Division II baseball program. He was driven to improve his game and, the summer after his freshman year of college, Vogel played second base for the North Bay Devil Rays, a Connie Mack League team on the verge of advancing to the regional tournament in New Mexico.

But, during warmups before a qualifying game during a tournament at Santa Rosa in July of 2000, Vogel's baseball life flashed before his left eye. With his back turned to the infield, he pivoted to his left after fielding a relay throw from center field. He had just released a ball from his right hand en route to the third baseman in a customary drill that relies on accuracy and rhythm.

"I've done it as thousand times," Vogel said. "I've been playing baseball since I was 5 years old."

Vogel's coach on the Devil Rays, Joe Fonteno, was standing between second base and the pitcher's mound. He was attempting to hit another fly ball to center field. Instead, Fonteno hit a liner and it blindsided Vogel, who had no chance to duck, get out of the way or use his glove or hands to defend himself.

It was hard for Fonteno to take, too.

"It was an accident and that was a friend and I still to this day feel bad about it," said Fonteno, who is a scout for the Milwaukee Brewers but is not presently coaching. "I'd rather not comment about it. I'd rather it go away."

Said Vogel, "I know it wasn't purposely done. It was a freak accident, unfortunately, but É"

Vogel's voice tailed off.
